Each year, since ancestral times, the mara'akame, or shaman, prepares to lead the pilgrimage to the sacred lans of Wiricuta, San Luis Potosí, a place where the gods gather and is the source of life, according to Huichol cosmogony. After purification, the attendees collect the the hi'kuri, the holy peyote that, when they eat it, leads them to colorful visions of the past, coming in contact with Grandfather Fire and gaining knowledge from their ancestors.
